Faster & cheaper Internet connection is no longer a dream.
April 21st, 2008 » 274 viewsOMG do you remember how it was streaming video on dial-up?? The memories are still fresh. One of my first online videos….I think I was trying to watch the trailer of Golden Chicken, the funniest Hong Kong movie of that year and it was so painful. The video, which I had diligently clicked “small size” for optimum streaming on dial-up had remained pixelated and truncated. And since it was small in size, I might as well watched the trailer through a cracked glass.
And then, broadband internet arrived, changed my life forever. Okay, not that quickly really. I had a hard time trying to get an account in my area, Cheras, ladies and gentlemen. Imagine the horror I went through. All those agents I spoke to said they couldn’t be sure when the port or something like that would be opened in Cheras. It was like a fruitless wait. Seemed like I was the only fast internet fiend in town, so sad. But one day, my dream came true. They activated me account and I was on Streamyx baby. I’m glad the worst is over, these days everyone can have their ports or something opened in their areas and have speeding net connections at whim.
To be honest, Dad was the happiest of em all. Well, you see…he’s the one forking out for the bills. With Streamyx, I could stay on the Internet as long as I’m able to stay awake and still only get billed what, RM88?
But when I was on dialup Internet I could rake in bills close to RM500 on mIRC alone. No blogs, no facebook whatchamacallits. Imagine me as the angry mySpace boy, but replace mySpace with mIRC. Every ticking second on the Internet was $$$. The parents actually confiscated my keyboard to no avail. But they managed to stopped me (albeit for a while) by taking away the CPU, lol.
Angry mySpace boy. Turn down your volume and if you’re on dial-up, don’t bother clicking play.
So yeah, I can say that Streamyx played an active role in preventing me from turning into a family-hating, internet-addicted delinquent. Except for the occasional down times, I’ve been pretty happy with their performance and have been a loyal customer since forever.
Recently, Streamyx has decided to come out with better broadband packages for us called Streamyx Combo. Now, if you subscribed to one of Streamyx Combo packages, you could save between RM10 - RM133 every month!!! This is because, all of the packages are inclusive of FREE TM Homeline rental fees. In a nutshell, your phoneline will be free of charge lah.
Everyone with a fixed TM line can subscribe to Streamyx Combo and start saving some moolah, including us existing Streamyx users. Just register via any TMpoint outlets or Streamyx authorised resellers.
Faster and cheaper Internet for all. W00t!

streamyx is fucken crap. crawling at the speed of a turtle on heat unless u only use it for emails. loading 2min youtube clips is still a pain in the asscrack.
u can be a client since forever and they will keep u on ur stupid 88/mth plan for 512k unless u tell them u want an upgrade to the 88 1M plan.totally no auto upgrade whenever to the new promos for their “loyal customers” (aka the idiots with no better alternatives). all they care abt is the new sign-ups.
and when u move house, they charge u the 88rm “installation” padahal all they do was get u to make an appointment and take half day off to wait for the technician who comes in and poke the phone socket for 2secs tops to make sure can work. even if there’s previous streamyx subscription by the previous tenant b4.
so bloodsucking pure genius.
oh. and dont u love their pop ups in their site? every link is another pop-up.
another genius site design brought to u by the letters S,U,X, and the number diao.
April 21st, 2008 at 2:45 pm
tc: better call em up and see :)
andrew: lol why not. it shows how obsessed i was.
naeboo: lmaoooo. i do agree that there should be an auto upgrade or at least a formal notification.
April 21st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
i agree with naeboo.
i juz moved house, and gotta pay for the TM contractor to charge me for Wiring Test, and a Streamyx contractor for connection/installation fee.
btw, Streamyx Combo is a cheat. Currently, I’m paying RM93 monthly (RM66 for 512kbps Streamyx, RM27 for Fixed Line)
Streamyx Combo price for 512 kbps: RM 90 per month
So why should I not pay RM3 extra for the use of a fixed line.
Streamyx Combo is only good for those paying for Streamyx at the price of Rm44 monthly (limited online time).
April 21st, 2008 at 3:29 pm
yeah.. VampireM.. i’m also using the Rm66 package and monthly of RM27 for the TM rental.. so its cheaper than the stupid so called deal… so nope.. its not worth it…
April 21st, 2008 at 3:31 pm
My dad had to keep the CPU cable and limit me to 3hrs max usage a day cos he was forced to pay RM800 a month min… cos of ICQ (most) + my IT homework research!
Now settle all the $$ problem with RM88 but we hook up with the computer more than with them… Complains won’t stop!
But it think if light users, places like starbucks is ok too.. pay for the drinks n use wi-fi. Enjoy your coffee and do wat you need to do.
April 21st, 2008 at 3:39 pm
streamyx is better than dial up of course,
BUT NO DOUBT IT CAN BE REAAAAALLYYY SLOW SOMETIMES…
especially when you’re gaming of youtubing,
gets annoying when u need to watch some videos but they just don’t load fast enough
April 21st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
vampirem: rm3 is also saving mah. btw i tot 512 is RM77 per month?
tc: heh since we don’t have other better options i don’t see what’s wrong with saving a few bucks a month ;)
rachel: yeah it’s definitely better than dialup. can’t please em parents lah haha
kritz: oh yeah, when my streamyx is down it’s really a pain man. but to their credit, they really try to fix it, sending ppl and all, in my experience lah heh.
April 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I think RM77 is for the package with modem.
oh yea, Streamyx Combo comes with the modem rental.
For those who already own a modem, like me, Combo deal is not worth it.
April 21st, 2008 at 5:37 pm
ya lor.
and they dont allow naked streamyx line subscription only. they practically FORCED u to take the rm27 fone line for fucks use. we all got mobiles and we dont need another landline that ur room-mates can use to call home or their horny bfs and pretend dontknow later.
April 21st, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Well, things could be better if it weren’t for the monopoly but then again, that’s an entirely different topic for another day ;)
Cheers!!! :D

OMG ok i try to be neutral…. for all of u guys that’s using TMnet (or TMnut as u guys like to say)… if u guys complaning bout line slow, did u guys think what did US (yes i mean all of TMnet users) did? We the users dat makes the line slow via P2P and downloading big big files dat makes other ppl that only surf and stream (depends on location)… and if u guys wanna have a pure line of speed… go for DSL (instead of ADSL) or better… just go for another ISP….
kimberlycun: obsessed? wat u obsessed o last time? like dat boy crazy onot? im lucky cos i only get to use pc when i was form 4 or 5, and internet for me last time solely for mails, games and surf for some ‘info’ (ahemm….)

One of the few good reasons being abroad is the fast internet connection at an affordable price. Does maxis’ broadband any cheaper or better?
I was addicted with mIRC for 7 years that was like 1993-2001. Is it now a thing in the past? Anyone care to update an ‘ORr-beat’ guy.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:31 am
andrew>> lemme scoff at ur mere suggestions at not dl-ing big files and using other ISPs.
what’s the use of broadband if u dont use it to dl big files? plus, the “alternatives” are not given the chance to expand as much as tmnet. jaring was kicked down before they had the chance to grow. (and more expensive too and mostly coverage is limited to klang valley)
why do u think digi maxis celcom et al are only doing the wifi crap only NOW? (and no maxis izzi whatever crap are super crap also)
it’s not pure freedom of choice at work here, buddy.
and last i checked, there’s no ISP offering DSL.
we r merely lapping up “broadband” that the internet gods discard as scraps from their dining table.
so much for ur suggestions and being neutral.
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:47 am
yeah kim, its so much more cheaper. i dont rake up a bill of 500/mth but almost hitting 200/mth with my usage. just signed up for the combo in mar 08. reason for not using streamyx much earlier was due to my frequent travelling here and there. and the downloading is sooooo much faster now…..
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:50 am
let me compound more misery on u andrew, like naeboo said, what is the use of broadband if i cant use it to download stuff on the net? if u just want to surf, then do us all a favor, unplug ur broadband and just use dialup, atleast we can suck that bandwidth u are wasting.
We are a growing country, our network infrastructure must grow too, in the past a countries growth was seen based on its highway and transport infrastructure but things have changed in the current world, a country’s development is seen based on its network and technology infrastructure. We can spend insane amounts to send ppl to space but cannot spend a few millions to upgrade the network structures. When private companies do try to do that, they are shot down by our monopolising providers aka telekom. And like naeboo said, i cant remember any ISP providing DSL. I think last time Jaring got but they are probably somewhere in the depths of hell so there goes the DSL
April 22nd, 2008 at 9:52 am
waaaaa, mun. i can feel the whiplash all the way here.
a-taaaahhh!
April 22nd, 2008 at 11:09 am
vampirem: yeah i guess when you already have a modem, there’s not much of a saving. maybe when your modem konks out heh
naeboo: i guess that’s what they’re changing now, waived phone line rental. no matter what u need the phoneline for the adsl connection.
hyelbaine: hehe yeah. im thinking making the best out of current situation ;)
andrew: downloading files and p2p is an important part of internet usage, i think it’s unfair to say that we should not indulge in those activities solely because we need to make space for the bandwidth. your opinion kills the idea of internet to begin with. also, adsl is just another form of DSL. certainly we could opt for other isps, if there’s any.
keith: im pretty sure a lot of people are still addicted to IRC as well as facebook, twitter, blogs and etc. heh
johnny: good on you! it does save quite a bit in the long run.
munak: hmm, from my little knowledge i thought dsl is broadband is dsl? i think streamyx is adsl. anyway, totally agree that more money should be spent on improving infrastructure and the market should definitely be opened up. as for now, i’ll take whatever savings i could make, hehe.
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
i somehow feel suspicious that they r still charging the rm27 for line rental.
i dont think it’s included. it’s in the fine print somewhere.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
seldom hear ppl praising streamyx.
wanna ask, what is your personal preference of connection speed? I just move to PJ area and looking for a internet connection. Am trying not to use any landline required, so I have tried Izzi, which has bad signal at my area and U surf which has extremely bad signal at my area as well. Maxis, well haven’t tried that yet. I am so bloody piss with living without internet (2 and half months now), amazingly I haven’t pulled out my hair yet!!
they say that streamyx doesnt provide the speed they promise. that is one of my consideration against getting it, but no one can answer me for sure. I don’t find it rather worth it, cause obviously they hiked up the amount to cover the rental. unless u subscribe for a smaller package which is settle 1mbps (1mbps is RM110 under streamyx combo). I think your RM88 package is the 1mbps package right?
perhaps my researched is flawed.
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Ok if dats the case i just explain my area of TMnet… honestly im quite satisfied with my area’s speed cos mostly the line wun breakdown (maybe there’s some VIP living here gua?)or maybe there’s less ppl here using internet…?
Before i switch to landline i did try out IZZI…low coverage (and they charged me merely bout RM150 cos i’d use over 3MB before 7 days which they claimed is FOC if returned within a week) , Maxis blocked p2p (depends on area oso), Celcom expensive cos need to buy own modem (last time la but not sure now) and DIGI (is quite ok for me bcos im using my ex-phone samsung D600 still can surf) UNFORTUNATELY cant really test out the real speed of EDGE cos mine is only GPRS supported…
For DSL… yes there is DSL in TMnut…. BUT for business line only… not for our conventional phoneline… was looking for this line but the dealer said if u have a registered company then only can subcribe…
In conclusion, there is no 100% perfect thing that exists… so wat we can do is just bare with it lo, for me when i DL movies or games i just turn it on 24/7 lo, still is monthly wat…? just a matter of time when it gonna finish only…
April 22nd, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Streamyx combo is ok for new users signing up as it’s slightly cheaper than subscribing the phone line and adsl package separately.
For existing users it’s not really worth changing to save a few bucks as you’d have to pay for installation/connection again.
Just to clear a few facts..
1) You NEED a phone line for any form of DSL, that’s how it works, through a limited frequency range over an existing phone line. Therefore you have to pay the line rental if you use it or not..same in any other country.
2) The other ’system’ that doesn’t need a phone line is Cable broadband using co-axle cable. Seen as though there is no existing Cable TV provider in Malaysia this is not a viable alternative.
3) There are various other options in the form of Wireless offerings from Izzi, Maxis, Digi and Jaring. None are particularly good.
4) DSL is a generic term, I think andrew is confusing DSL with SDSL (Symmetric DSL where the upload and download speed is the same). It is available for business lines from TM. Consumers generally only need ADSL (Asymmetric where the download speed is higher than upload) as they don’t use heavy upload. Having SDSL won’t give you any better performance downstream than ADSL as it’s the same technology.
5) ADSL quality is dependant on many factors including the distance of your home from the exchange, the quality of the copper cable from your house to the exchange, the number of users at your DSLAM, the contention ratio and so on. Corporate lines tend to have a lower contention ratio and thus higher quality of service.
6) Streamyx local loop performance is generally fine (download a file or load a local web site based in a Malaysian data center - you will get max speed for your package). The issue is with the International links and the lack of capacity on overall architecture. We are quite distant from both the US and Europe where the majority of rich content is hosted. Australia is in a similar position and while their quality is much higher, so is the price and you have to pay for your package per Gigabyte - it’s not unlimited. Be thankful your broadband is not data limited, I think the day might come though were there are different packages for heavy users. Those downloading heavily should pay more.
That’s all ;)
April 23rd, 2008 at 12:09 am
yup shaolintiger… thanks for clarification…. is SDSL… and thanks for much info…. think i need to catch up more on IT knowledge rather just playing video games hehe…
April 23rd, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Use maxis broadband wired. its only rm68 a month. Speed 100Mbps. So far so good. I bought a router so i can surf anywhere in my house - still great speed!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
naeboo: hrmm, i didn’t read the fine print. it’s still generally cheaper than the existing charges.
wine: im not an expert, but i find my unlimited maxis 3g very reliable and fairly fast in my area during the unfortunate streamyx downtimes (you would need a 3g enabled phone that could function as modem for this). of course, i’d prefer to use streamyx as opposed to other providers, namely because for now they’re the forerunner in terms of infrastructure and reliability. many other factors come into picture too when it comes to speed of Internet, pls refer to ShaolinTiger’s comment for your reference. good luck!
andrew: there we go, as at now, streamyx is the most logical option for any internet user in malaysia.
shaolintiger: gems from the expert. thanks!
ashley: where are you staying?
