Installing Garmin Mobile XT on Nokia N96.
November 9th, 2008 218 Comments » » 151,102 viewsI won a beautiful Nokia N96 recently at a party. Actually, my boyfriend won it and he gave it to me. I’ve been eyeing the phone for the longest time…..just the sheer beauty of it. Thank you babs! I did spent the whole day upgrading the firmware using Ovi (so easy!), transfering contacts, images, everything, installing Gmail, Twibble and deng deng deng deng….Garmin!

Yeah I’m really tired!
I am an ardent user of Garmin Mobile XT. I had it on my previous phone, Nokia N82. It’s the most awesome thing ever, after secretly recording your own singing voice in the car that is. After upgrading to Nokia N96, I tried installing the same executables to it but the Garmin never worked. The Garmin logo appeared under Applications but the programme just wouldn’t open.

Where am I going?
After searching high and low for the solution, I finally discovered the root of the problem. The existing Garmin .exes I used on my old phone would only work for N82 and N95. As for the new N96, only the updated .exes can work on it.
Here’s how to install Garmin Mobile XT on your Nokia N96:
1. Download to your computer the Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60 3rd Edition, Ver. 5.00.10 from this link.
2. Download to your computer Garmin Mobile XT Free Basemap, Ver. 4.xx.xx from this link.
3. Download to your computer Garmin Mobile XT Support Files, Ver. 4.xx.xx from this link.
4. Download GM-MySInMXT.exe from this link. (this is map of Malaysia and you have to be registered before you could access the site)
5. Connect your N96 (via memory storage) or memory disk to your computer and make sure it’s detected by your computer.
6. Now, run the recently downloaded files on the computer, one after another, in this order:
- v4.xx.xxx Support File,
- v4.xx.xxx Basemap File
- GMXT v5.00.10
When prompted to choose storage space, always choose the phone’s memory.
7. Disconnect phone memory from computer. It’s time to configure Garmin on your phone. Go to your phone’s File Manager >Garmin >Applications >Symbian >RES >GarminMobileXT.sis and install the .sis
If you can’t find GarminMobileXT.sis, check the root directory, it should be there. Install the .sis as per normal.
8. After that, go to Applications> run Garmin Mobile XT. It won’t connect to GPS satelite yet, so just ignore it.
9. You should have received your device unlock code from the manufacturer of Garmin, however if you haven’t, there are instructions on the Internet to guide you on how to get yours ;)
10. Copy the device unlock code and paste it in a notepad, then save the file as SW.UNL
11. Reconnect your phone/memory to your computer.
12. Copy the SW.UNL file into
13. Then, run GM-MySInMXT.exe, and copy gmapsupp.img into
14. Disconnect your phone from your computer.
15. Go to Applications >Garmin Mobile XT >Settings >System >Remote GPS >Select ‘Use Attached/Built-in GPS’ >Enable and it’s all done.
16. Wait for satellite signal to strengthen and then you can start navigating around various places with confidence!

Greenlight means good to go!
p/s: This also works on Nokia E71.
Update: if you can’t find attached GPS, please check your sw.unl file. As commenter Joanna said
“go back to your garmin folder. Check out your SW.UNL file. It probably has an additional .txt at the end of it, delete that part and save it as SW.UNL. Then go back to the application and you’ll see the Route option appear.”

November 21st, 2008 at 1:54 am
franky – go back to your garmin folder. Check out your SW.UNL file. It probably has an additional .txt at the end of it, delete that part and save it as SW.UNL. Then go back to the application and you’ll see the Route option appear. Thanks Kim for insisting on me installing Garmin lar. Its just sooooo damn cool! *hugs* Also thank u for putting up with the relentless calls. Muahahahahaha. Sausage tomolo.

If the remote gps enable is not showing the *.unl file is incorrect or it might have a *.txt extention. Must make sure the sw.unl file is in the garmin directory else it will not work.

I hope this helps
December 12th, 2008 at 6:23 am
Hello
For those who don’t see ‘Use Attached/Built-in GPS’
On the tool bar at the top of your window go to tools->folder options->view and tick off ‘hide extensions for known file types’
Then delete .txt extention and save it
It should work now, because i had the same problem

Hi,
You say install to the phone memory. My phone memory has a max of 84Mb but over 40Mb is used by system files.
I cannot delete any to make room for the large files you say to install.
Is phone memory the correct place or can the files go in the Mass memory?
Thanks

Thanks for a gr8 upload, i must be thick of something i have got the garmin working but when i go to remote gps there are only 2 options (connection allowed to Garmin GPS devices only) and (Pair New GPS). I want to use the internal GPS.
I have done this part aswell
(Copy the device unlock code and paste it in a notepad, then save the file as SW.UNL)
Any advice would grateful.(
Thanks again.
February 4th, 2009 at 7:16 am
Eventually got it working with the internal GPS.
I Opened notepad, copied the device code, went to file to save as, on the filename as Sw.unl and deleted the .txt, on Save as type clicked all files.
(Baically make sure you delete the .txt otherwise it will not work, you can go to your phone filemanager under garmin to check).
Then paseted in my phone’s garmin folder now i can choose built in gps.
I hope that helps.

April 2nd, 2009 at 1:47 am
Ive done everything what it says but when i get to number 7 where it tells you to Disconnect phone memory from computer. It’s time to configure Garmin on your phone. Go to your phone’s File Manager >Garmin >Applications >Symbian >RES >GarminMobileXT.sis and install the .sis.
When i get there i have 3 options GMBMP,GMTSR ,GMTXT, the first and last options have question marks by them and when you click on them it says”unable to open, file type not supported and the middle one GMTSR when i click on that a page opens with a number one in it?
Any ideas?
many thanks
April 2nd, 2009 at 3:34 am
Steve:
Go to your phone’s Installation > App. Manager > Garmin Mobile XT.
Then run the program to Install the Garmin from there.
I’m recently experience the same problem just like you. and solved :D
btw, thanks to kimberlycun for guide. Its really work!
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Done it, thank god for that. For the people out there who need the code.Download the Key generator you can get it within from most torrent sites. It will ask for your “CARD ID” to get this goto garmin on you phone Tools, setting,About, and you will see it there under ID, 7 digit code.Put that into your key generator and then you have your device unlock code. Then start from step 10.Job done
many thanks kimberlycun.

April 15th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I can’t find the garmin folder with file manager.
the 3 files v4.xx.xxx Support File, v4.xx.xxx Basemap File, GMXT v5.00.10 are in the phone memory but when i open it ‘unable to open. file type not supported’ shows up :(
can anyone help? thanks!
April 16th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Shu, you should copy and install using you pc not run in your phone.
April 17th, 2009 at 2:14 am
Hey nik thanks for replying.
I have a mac and on it the files are .exe type so i can’t open or run them?
what i understood from the instructions was that
(Step 6) you transfer each file onto the phone via nokia multimedia transfer
(Step 7) open up the files on the phone – BUT this is where i can’t locate the garmin folder and instead it’s 3 seperate files that the phone can’t open up + no .sis file
6. Now, run the recently downloaded files on the computer, one after another, in this order:
v4.xx.xxx Support File,
v4.xx.xxx Basemap File
GMXT v5.00.10
When prompted to choose storage space, always choose the phone’s memory.
7. Disconnect phone memory from computer. It’s time to configure Garmin on your phone. Go to your phone’s File Manager >Garmin >Applications >Symbian >RES >GarminMobileXT.sis and install the .sis
If you can’t find GarminMobileXT.sis, check the root directory, it should be there. Install the .sis as per normal.

HI
Is there anyway to have multiple maps. I want to have a US and a UK one. The combined one I downloaded for the US and UK does not allow me to do travel directions as asks for a state and no UK ones listed. Yeh, it finds local towns.
Any ideas?

Thank you Kimberly, I have just succesfully loaded onto N82. For a newbie like me it wasn’t easy. Changing sw.unl from a text file to a .unl file was the tricky bit. As a newbie I simply erased .txt from the file name, but I found that this doesn’t actually change the file type. The all important sw.unl file MUST show as a .unl file in the Garmin directory. Thanks again, now I can begin to play with it…
April 24th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Thanks, Kimberly. But the application asked me for Product Key, could you send it to my mail: syao2009@gmail.com. Thanks again!

Guys,
i’ve found the full version of garmin mobile xt ver 5.00.20. ( i cant remmember where i download it). dont have to unlock everything. it already in full version. but, the installation wont give you any internal GPS function. so, you need garmine mobile unlock ver 1.5. (different version wont give you any good). then, just copy the unlock code, and generate the two files as described in this forum. paste it into garmin dir in your smart phone. i work great in my new E75!!!
June 14th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Guys,
Whatever it is, you need to have the knowledge to search in the internet. use the right key words in the search bar. rapidshare search engine is a gold mine for those whoever know how to use it! i just know about this garmin mobile last two days. and today, i already got the full version installed in my smartphone. nevertheless, a huge thanks to all of you as from this forum, i finally understand how to install it.

I just add another map .. but it is not working , saying “Can’t unlock maps using unit Id xxxxxxxx ” I already generate the unlocked code for both device unlock and map unlock.
How to paste it in SW.UNL ?

this was the most helpful and easiest tutorial i cam across, thanks a lot.
and I’d like to note that i faced a little bump during the installation, you forgot to mention in step #6 to install “Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60″
as without it Garmin just wont load on my phone or sometimes hangs.
did that and it was successful on my Nokia Navigator 6110.
thanks again.

Nice guide!! It works on my E71.
Garmin installer:
http://rapidshare.com/files/214305723/GarminXT-S60-v40.rar
_Plug your phone and use the mass storage/usb mode (not the PC Suite one !!!).
_Then copy those folders (Garmin,Private,Resource,Sys) from the main archive to the root of your device (E:\).
_Copy them one by one, otherwise you’ll get a “Corrupted apps” error.(1)
_Unplug your phone, wait a few seconds and it will tell you that the app wasn’t installed, it’s normal.
_Go to your phone’s app manager and finally install Garmin.
_Run it and get your personnal CardID in Tools->Settings->About.
_Write it down and close Garmin.
_On your computer, run the provided keygen and enter your CardID at the top (Enter your Unit ID here) then generate your unlock code.
_Copy/paste it into notepad and save this file (without any extension!) as “SW.UNL”.
_Don’t close the keygen and at the bottom in the “Map Product” dropdown field select and enter “378″ in the 1st field (FID).
_Copy/paste it into notepad and save this file (without any extension!) as “GMAPSUPP.UNL”.
_Now copy those “GMAPSUPP.UNL” and “SW.UNL” files into the Garmin folder of your phone.
_Copy the unlocked map of your choice (GMAPSUPP.IMG) in the same folder (E:\Garmin).
_That’s it, off you go! Just remember to turn on only the “Attached/Built in GPS” in your phone’s GPS settings to avoid beeing charged.
Good luck!!
