Go down the Honda route. Reasonable power and reliable.

Holds its resale value pretty well.

Don't go for anything more than 5 years because you'll just be paying interest.

The loose handbrake issue sounds familiar : )

Or, if you're lucky you could get a car like mine that actually appreciates some 20% since I bought it 4 years ago!

Ask yourself: how long can the heart's liking last for the car that you will buy. Sure, first few months you will be beaming with pride and joy, then reality of high installments/insurance/road tax/maintenance slowly creep in (trust me they will). When that happens, it's too lat to look back with the "I shudda have..". Or maybe you will start the whole cycle again with another car you think you like...

Imagine what you can do with the additional money you pay to get the car you think you want. RM500 more? You can actually feed a whole family! But hey that's me, I'm one without the heart and only with the thinking head, so probably not the best advice you can have :)

Go for a car that you find fitting with your personality. It's ok to get a 2nd hand car as long condition of the car is acceptable. In fact, get a friend or two, to go with you to check out the car and hear their thoughts on the car too :)

You'll know it's yours instantly when you fall in "love with the car at first sight".

hmm... here is a suggestion! ask some of your friends who own the same car and see what they have to comment. they might give you some insights on repair and part costs.
you might be surprised that some more expensive car have lower maintenance cost than a proton. anyway, good luck and will be waiting to hear on what did you test drove.
