Selamat Hari Raya Haji kepada semua umat Islam!
Yesterday, my Mom and I observed a commotion at the field opposite our home. Many people have gathered and they all seemed very excited. As it turned out, the neighbourhood was fussing over three cows that were to be sacrificed for today. My Mom too got excited and asked me whether I’ve seen cows getting slaughtered on Raya Haji. I haven’t, so my Mom suggested I go to the field, armed with a camera. I recoiled in horror, told my Mom that it’s not a very good idea and that it seems disrespectful to treat the event like a tourist show. Only then it occured to my Mom so she called her colleague, who is a Moslem, to clear things up.
Mom: Eh Lily, I nak tanya ni esok kan raya korban? Kalau I pergi esok tengok diorang korban lembu ngan tangkap gambar, you ingat I karang kena korban pulak tak? (Hey Lily, tomorrow is Raya Qurban isn’t it? If I went to watch them sacrifice the cow and to snap pictures, do you think I would be sacrificed instead?)
Aunty Lily: Lah…takdelah, cuma bila you nak ambik gambar tu biar minta izin dari tukang sembelih tu. Tak baik nanti masa nak sembelih tu you punya flash light distract-kan dia ke. (No….Just that when you want to take pictures ask for permission from the person who’s doing the slaughtering. Not nice to distract him with your flash light.)
Mom: Oh…ok! T’kasih cik adik cantik molek! (Oh…ok! Thanks little miss petite beautiful!)
Aunty Lily: So Raya Cina I datang bertandang ye? (So Chinese New Year I come to visit, ok?)
Mom: Set! (It’s set!)
And that’s the beauty of being a Malaysian. So Mom and I decided to check the ritual out this morning. But as it turned out, I went to Thai Club with the gang last night and got home about 5am so yeah, I missed it.

As a vegetarian, I am glad you didn’t take any snap shots.
I will start digging an escape tunnel for the cows to escape next year … hope they are smart enough to use it.
Run cows, be free Run Run!

Hey Gang, I know some of you guys like your meat but vegetarians can be cool too. Einstein, Ghandi, Jerry Garcia etc. Check it out: http://www.famousveggie.com/peoplenew.cfm
Einstein once remarked that 3 or 4 generations from now, everybody will be vegetarians. The world’s eco system simply cannot sustain the meat industry folks. Mc Donald’s kills a coupla billion animals a year (which coincidently is about how much they also spend on marketing per annum dollars wise) and you don’t even want to know what KFC does to cute baby chicks. It’s the cruelty that pushed me over to the other side. You cannot possibly love animals and partake of the meat.
I think ol’ Albert’s called it right: its only a matter of time so why not be part of the vanguard. Don’t mean to sound preachy but as you learn more about the meat industry you’ll come around.
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated….I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by people from the cruelty of human kind.” - Mahatma Ghandi
